Betting On Suited Hanfs Pre-flop

Betting on a suited hand in Texas Hold Em may seem like a good idea, but as this article discovers actually it’s often pretty pointless.

When you are dealt 2 cards of the same suit sometimes you may be tempted to call and try to get to the flop, often in the hope of making a flush. Sometimes this may be worthwhile, two high value running cards such as a 9 and a 10 are often worth the bet. Other times however you should simply fold.

Lets suppose you are dealt a 10 and a 5 of the same suit. This is a classic hand a beginner with throw their money away on. Why is this a waste? Well firstly the flush is a long shot, so while it should be considered, it should not be the primary reason for placing a bet. In the earlier example there are other possibilities; a high pair with a decent kicker or a run. With a 10 and a 5 however a run is not possible and you have a high pair with a low kicker or a low pair with a high kicker, both pretty worthless, even dangerous when the stakes go up; fold them straight away!

When 2 suited cards can be worth even raising on is when you get 2 in sequence of a very high value, such as KH and a QH, or a AS, JS. Both of these hands are worth betting aggressively on pre-flop to eliminate players and bump up the potential winnings.

With thousands of scenarios, it’s impossible to offer conclusive advice, sometimes you will bet hard on a high suited hand and be forced to fold, other times you may get luck with a lower hand. As with all situations always know when to bet and when to fold, and never be tempted to throw good money after bad 'just in case'.
