Different Types Of Online Poker Tournaments

Multi-Table Tournaments

Multi table tournaments or MTT's are tournaments that have been scheduled to start at a specific time, regardless of how many people are entered. Often there are many people fighting it out for bigger money then in Sit N Go's.

Re-buy Tournaments

These give the player the option to "re-buy' chips if they lose their chips in the early stages of play.  Re-buy tournaments are often more aggressive then normal tournaments as people have less fear about being eliminated from the game. Often there is also an add-on allowed after the re-buy period has ended, where all players left in the game are given the option to buy a set amount of chips to increase their stack.  The money from all re-buys and add-ons goes back into the prize money.

Cash Games

Cash games also known as Ring games, are poker games that usually have no predetermined end time (online) so the player is able to join and leave at any time. Unlike a tournament you are not play to come first, but instead  play with real money chips to make bets on your hands and potentially win money on each hand.

Double Or Nothing

This is a relatively new game in the world of online poker, however it is rapidly gaining popularity.  Usually it involves 10 people, half the people walk away with double the money and the other half get nothing - hence the name 'Double or Nothing'.  This type of game requires a different strategy from MTT tournaments, but once mastered, it can be a very profitable game indeed.

Heads-Up

Heads-up play is one of the most skilled and difficult things to learn in poker,  this type of game involves just you and one other player, head to head. The blinds increase until one of you knocks the other out. The winner takes all.

Freerolls

These are Mixed table tournaments, that cost nothing to enter, usually as a promotion offered by the poker site, wither for money or to qualify for a place in a larger tournament. The style of play in these games is much more aggressive, as people have to paid anything to enter, they are less worried about 'losing' their own cash. However if exploited carefully this can be to your own advantage.

Satellites

Satellites are games where you play for a place into a larger tournament, sometimes it is a sub-satellite where you have to win 2 or 3 games running to get a place.

Play Money Games

These are where no one plays any money to play the games, and no money is won. I would generally discourage new players from playing in these styles of games, as often you can pick up bad habits and people play  so differently when no money is involved then in real poker. If you don't want to deposit any money then try the freerolls instead
