Understanding Omaha Poker

Omaha poker is the second most popular poker game played in the world. It is very similar to Texas hold-em poker, with some strategic differences. In this game, a player has to make up a 5 card hold from both the cars dealt to him and the cards laid on the table. A 5-card deck is used in this variant of poker and 10 people can play on one table.

The actual difference between the two variants is that in Omaha poker 4 face down cards are dealt to a player, whereas in Texas hold-em poker, this number is 4. Other than this, there is no defining difference between the two.

Added to these 4 cards, are 5 community cards laid on the table which are offered to a player. The player thus has 9 cards, from which he can create his hand. From these, the player has to use 2 of the cards dealt to him and 3 of the community cards to make up his five best cards. The hands made up in Omaha poker end up being stronger most times, than in other forms of the game, because there are more cards to choose from.

The fight in Omaha poker is for the pot of money bet on the table. This fight can go for up to 4 rounds, provided that 2 players remain to play to the end. Leaving the game is called folding in technical terms and if all players but one, fold before all the rounds are over, the entire pot goes to the remaining player. The betting starts with the first round in which all the players are given 4 faces down cards.

3 community cards are then laid faced up on the table by the dealer for use by the players. The players can bet after these cards have been put on the table. After this, in the second round, the dealer places 1 more community card on the table. This card is also laid faced up. The next round involves lying of another face up card on the table. This is the last community card and this round is popularly called the river. Players are free to bet or fold in any of these rounds.

Flop is the part of the game in which all the players disclose their cards. As already stated, there is a better possibility of getting good hands in this form of the game because of higher number of cards used. Attracted by this possibility, players tend to play on till the flop before folding.

Now, as poker involves, both skill and chance, players are always trying to make guesses about the cards dealt to other players and also the card yet to be dealt. Now, the number of cards being more in Omaha poker, this guesswork becomes harder. Added to this, as the players have to use a combination of 2 pocket cards and 3 community cards, the resulting combination becomes even harder to guess. And, so the outcome of the game, on which the whole winnings depends, is much harder to make out. And this makes the game more complicated and interesting at the same time.

The most popular variant of Omaha poker played in the US is the hi-low. This trend is markedly different from that in Europe, where the popular variant of the game is the Hi Omaha. The name, Hi-low is derived from the longer name Hi-Low split, which stands for eight or better.

The thing that makes Hi-low poker is that it’s not just the player with the best hand who wins. This player may just have to share his pot with another player on the table who has the lowest hand. There are some rule based requirements to be fulfilled in order for the player with the low hand to get a share of the earning and this case these are not fulfilled, and then player with the best hand gets to take the entire pot.
